Veil of Tears is a documentary film that tells the story of women in India who are terribly oppressed and yet not without hope. It is narrated by Natalie Grant, a Grammy-nominated recording artist. Her trip to India in 2004 changed her and inspired her music & charitable pursuits. The film was shot in various regions of India. Can you imagine living in a country where you are persecuted/victimized/abused just because you're a woman? In India (and some other Asian countries), women are considered inferior to men and they get no respect. The caste system makes it worse. The dalits (aka the untouchables) are treated as sub-humans. India is a country of contrasts between the very rich and the very poor. Millions of people live in slums. Did you know that every year in India, more than 7,000 women are doused with kerosene and burned to death by their husbands? The wife’s crime: an insufficient dowry. In poverty-stricken areas, husbands usually spend their time gambling and drinking, ignoring their families. Wives have to do hard labor and often are forced to be prostitutes by their own husbands. Wives are also blamed for their husbands' deaths. Widows are abandoned. Daughters are unwanted. There are 11 million abortions a year in India.
This film is not for the faint of heart! You will be appalled at unimaginable sufferings, heart-breaking plight of some women, and the ugly horror of injustice. Despite the dark oppression, there are those who are reaching out and bringing hope to these women. Gospel for Asia (GFA) sends out native women missionaries to minister to these women with the love and the Gospel of Jesus Christ Who alone can give them eternal hope. They also provide health care, education, training, and counseling. My family and I have been long-time supporters of Gospel for Asia and we'd like to encourage you all to watch Veil of Tears (running time: 90 minutes) and check GFA out.
