"I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, in Whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Colosssians 2:1-3- Paul was refuting a heresy (Gnosticism) that emphasized knowledge/"higher thought" as the means of salvation and on the strict observance of certain Jewish requirements almost to the point of ascetism. Paul once again tried to point people back to the deity and all-sufficiency of Christ. He is the Embodiment of God's wisdom and knowledge. "For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding." (Proverbs 2:6)
- Paul's goal for the Colossians, the Laodiceans, and others is that they might be comforted, strengthened, encouraged, united by love and truth (complete understanding of Christ). "I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of His power. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, Who created all things....In Him (Christ) and through faith in Him (Christ) we may approach God with freedom and confidence." (Ephesians 3:7-9, 12)
