Alpha and Omega

The Alpha and the Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. They are used figuratively to mean the whole/entirety. Here Jesus says of Himself that He is the Alpha and the Omega Who is, Who was, and Who is to come, the Almighty. It indicates His infinite, eternal, divine nature, His sovereignty, immutability, and omnipotence. He identifies Himself as God Who has no beginning and no ending. "Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD--with the first of them and with the last--I am He." (Isaiah 41:4) Christ is before all things (Colossians 1:17a). Preexistence before time. He has always existed from eternity past to eternity beyond. Christ is the beginning as He is the Author and Creator of all things. He is also the end as He brings all things to a glorious conclusion. Nothing began before Him and nothing can outlast Him. "Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please." (Isaiah 46:9-10)

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8) Christ is the ever-existing One. He has been in control over all world history. He is outside of time and He is unchangeable. He was born to die as the ultimate sacrifice to save us from our sin. He is God with us (Immanuel), He is the Head of His Church, and He is preparing a place for us. He is to come suddenly and unexpectedly, with power and glory for the final consummation of all things.

Christ is Yahweh Sabaoth (the Lord of Hosts, the Almighty). "He Who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals His thoughts to man, He Who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth--the LORD God Almighty is His Name." (Amos 4:13) Christ is our all-powerful, all-sufficient Lord.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You alone are worthy of all our praise and worship! It is such a comfort to know that no matter what happens, You remain the same, You are in control, and You are able to carry me through it all. Thank You for Your unending love, grace, mercy, and faithfulness! May You always be first and preeminent in my life! You are all I ever need!
