“…Who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." Galatians 1:4-5
Jesus voluntarily gave Himself for our sins. Salvation is God's gift to us. Jesus died so that we may have eternal life. "...Who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good." (Titus 2:14) The righteousness and justice of God require payment for sin. Jesus paid that payment for us once and for all by His death on the cross according to the will of God the Father. There is nothing we can do to pay for our sin. All we can do is to rest in the finished work of Christ on the cross. He rescues us/delivers us/sets us free from the penalty and bondage of sin. He saves us from the present evil age (world). This implies ongoing sanctification. All glory and honor belong to God Who does not have to save us but wants to and does because He loves us!
"We have been saved from the penalty of sin. We are being saved from the power of sin. We shall be saved from the presence of sin." (Bishop Westcott)
