Jesus commands us to love others as He loves us. The ultimate love in action is Christ's sacrificial death on the cross for all sinners. We are to love each other as we have been loved by Jesus.
Self-sacrificing love is the greatest kind of love! The proof of self-sacrificing love is the willingness to die/lay down our lives/put selves aside for others. "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." (1 John 3:16) It means more than simply dying physically for them because one could only do so once :) and we don't always have the opportunity to do so, either. Jesus wants us to love each other continually. It means that we are to die to our selfishness, pride, prejudice and/or give up our comfort, conveniences, and excuses in order to reach out to others with sacrificial love. It means we go out of our way to meet our friends' needs. Are you willing to open your hearts and homes to others? Do you make others feel welcome and loved? What kind of friends are you? I want to be a loving, faithful, supportive, Christlike friend to all.
Such a standard of love can be accomplished only as Christ's own love is flowing through our lives! We are to love each other with the love of the Lord.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, may Your love overwhelm us and flow through us continually. Please empower us to love others like Jesus... unconditionally, selflessly, and sacrificially. Please help us to die to self repeatedly and daily. May everything we do be motivated by love and done in love! In Jesus' Name, I pray. Amen.
