- The Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know Him Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). God wants us to know with certainty that we are eternally secure in Christ, that Jesus is the true God and that He Himself is our Eternal Life. It is extremely important to know and believe in the true God/true Jesus Christ of the Bible. Many false teachers preach a different Jesus (minimizing or denying His deity).
- The Scriptures teach that we can know with absolute confidence that we have eternal life. We are in Christ and Christ is in us. What a glorious union! This confidence/assurance is not based on our feelings but is founded upon the promises of our Faithful God in His Word. It depends not on the amount or strength of our faith but on the object of our faith--Jesus Christ. "I know Whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day." (2 Timothy 1:12b)
- It is so fitting for John to put verse 21 right after this verse, "Dear children, keep yourselves from idols." Since we are the children of the True God, why should we ever be going after idols/false gods? We must guard ourselves from idols (substitutes for true God; anything that occupies the place due to God). Are our devotion and trust placed in Christ alone?
