The Joy of Fellowship

John wrote his first epistle to refute the heresy of Gnosticism, which teaches that salvation is gained through the acquisition of mystical knowledge and that Jesus Christ’s physical body was not real. John asserted that he himself and the apostles who were eyewitnesses of Jesus had heard, had seen, and had touched Jesus Christ, the Word of Life, even after Christ's resurrection. John also wrote this epistle so that others may share his experience of fellowship and joy in Christ and with one another. Our joy is made full/complete when we have fellowship with God through Christ and fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ. To know Christ and to experience sweet fellowship with one another sharing the wonderful things of Christ bring great joy to our hearts. 

I love the acronym J.O.Y. When we put/honor Jesus first and above all else in our lives (Matthew 22:37-38), and next put/honor others above ourselves (Philippians 2:3-4), we will experience joy.

My Fave Five this week:-
1. CHRISTmas: Celebrating CHRIST's birth with family. I also loved the candlelight service at church. The feast, fellowship, and fun were fabulous, too :). Giving and serving others always bring me joy. I also like seeing my loved ones being happy and surprised by the gifts I pick out  for them.

2. My kids helped bake cookies for our annual Christmas give-away goodies. We enjoyed delivering them (plus my homemade bookmarks) and visiting with our neighbors.

3. My husband has had last Friday and this whole week off. We love having him home with us!

4. Our Top Ten Highlights from 2011 (which includes the slideshow I made that sums up our year in pictures)

Repent and reverse your direction; receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. He will repair your broken heart and reverse your thinking to get you on the right track (the narrow road). Reverse now before it's too late...Death is the point of no return. The chance of dying is one in one. Please don't leave earth without Jesus!

Medically and realistically, she should have been dead. But God had other plans. Kristen courageously and candidly shares in this book her struggles, mistakes, depth of despair, challenges of living without legs, and a second chance to live in Christ who gives her strength and joy, hope and purpose. Against all odds, she lives to tell others of God, the Life Giver, encourage others to cherish life because it's a gift from God, and remind them that He has a special plan for each person. This book includes personal notes from Kristen sharing messages she wishes someone had told her when she was depressed and struggling with loss, shame from sexual abuse, and suicidal thoughts. At the end of the book, you will also find a message from Kristen's mom, Jan Anderson, and a list of suicide warning signs. Suicide is never the answer! Jesus Christ is! He turns tragedy into victory.

Life, In Spite of Me is a must read for anyone who is suffering from depression and/or suicidal thoughts. It seems that now more and more people, especially teens, are hurting, living aimlessly, and struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts. May the Lord use Kristen and her book to touch many lives with the truth of the Gospel and the eternal hope in Christ!

I've found Nick Vujicic to be such a wonderful inspiration since I first knew about him a few years ago. I was so excited when I had a chance to review this book. Wow...what a gem it is! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from cover to cover. This book made me laugh out loud several times. Nick is funny and witty. He is also insightful and joyful. Nick is truly a blessing to the world. If you are discouraged or are going through hard times, this book will lift your spirit and warm your heart. With God on your side, life is definitely without limits and you can be an overcomer like Nick! Nick wants us to remember that if he can do it, we can, too :)!

Merry/"Mary" CHRISTmas!

Hope y'all are having a "Mary"/Merry CHRISTmas (not a Martha type) by focusing on CHRIST, rather than a plethora of activities! Mary sat at the Lord's feet listening to what He said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. Remember what Jesus said to Martha,"You are worried and upset about many things, but only ONE thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:38-42)

The Joy of Unexpected Circumstances

The Christmas season is upon us again. Starbucks is selling their Christmas blend; stores are posting their holiday hours; and moms everywhere are making a list and checking it twice, planning for a special Christmas day. It has been our family’s tradition to spend Christmas with relatives.  Last year money was tight and we were unable to travel, this is not how we had planned to spend Christmas day but circumstances were beyond our control. Realizing my three boys--who are now teenagers--will not be under our roof for much longer, I wanted to have a special Christmas with just the five of us.  

Leading up to Christmas morning we all made mouth-watering, cinnamon cut-out cookies, spent time together sticking tape everywhere while trying to wrap presents, and enjoyed spending time together.  We did not have much money, but were having fun making memories.  When Christmas morning arrived and we sat around to open gifts my eyes welled up with overwhelming joy.  This mother was trying to absorb all the activity that was going on all around her: the smiles from each of my teenage boys, the sounds of laughter, and the smell of cinnamon rolls cooking in the oven.  If I could freeze a moment in time, this would be it.  I don’t know what the future holds for each of my boys, but that Christmas morning I wanted to soak it all in so I could recall this special day for years to come.  Despite struggling financially, unexpected circumstances turned into immense joy and a lifetime of memories.

Mothers treasuring special moments is not something new.  Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, was one who tried to soak in everything that first Christmas morning.  Even after Christ’s birth she was still trying to absorb what the angel had said to her when he delivered the news that she was going to be the mother of the coming Savior.  She reflected on the time she had with her cousin Elizabeth while they were both pregnant.  Along with comprehending the unusual way her son came into this world. 

While very pregnant with child, Mary and Joseph traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem to register for the census.  Never did she imagine she would deliver her baby in a barn with a manger being the only thing to lay him down in.  These were not the circumstances she had envisioned.  Before she had time to catch her breath, suddenly all around her there was excitement when shepherds showed up reporting what they had seen and heard.  There were angels—a multitude of angels—who were singing and declaring the Savior was born and a bright star led them to her and Joseph.    So much has happened in a short amount of time and Mary did not want to forget any of it.  Instead she stepped back and “treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19)

Mary did not exactly know what the plans were for her son, but she knew it was going to change the lives of everyone on earth.  She was preparing her heart to obey God concerning her son Jesus, without the full knowledge of what was going to come while at the same time quietly reflecting and capturing this one special moment in time.

May this Christmas be filled with joy and a lifetime of memories, even if you find yourself in unexpected circumstances.  Merry Christmas!

Wear Joy

Thanksgiving day in central Florida broke warm and sunny under a blue sky. The thin fall breeze beckoned me. Taking my bike out, I rode the neighborhood feeling so grateful for all my blessings.

Joy bubbled up in my spirit. I’d been feeling it for a day, these waves of joy, but as I rode my bike and talked to God, the waves strengthened and splashed my heart the entire ride.

I’d laugh. Then tear up. And laugh again. As one who’s battled and won the war on anxiety and fear attacks, the onslaught of joy was welcomed, and actually sparked a new prayer in my heart. I’ve endured attacks of panic, time for attacks of joy.

The journey of joy began earlier in the year while writing a book coincidentally named, “Dining with Joy.”

Sitting at my table one day, revelation hit me. “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” Nehemiah 8:10. The more I meditated on it, the more I wanted His joy. I don’t want my strength. I want His.

Not long after, I went to Nashville for a girl’s weekend. One of my friends handed me a coffee cup inscribed with “The joy of the Lord is my strength.”

Ever just know? God is calling.

During the holiday season, I turn 50. Yep, the big 5-0. Can’t stop it, I might as well embrace it.

Fifty is often associated with jubilee, a time of restoration, and healing, even release from debt and slavery. It’s a time of returning to property, and inheritance.

A time of rest.

A time of JOY!

This past week, a friend gifted me with a beautiful Christmas ornament. Inscribed on it? You guessed it.

JOY!

To me, the world doesn’t look very joyful. There are social and economic woas. But God is speaking and offering joy.

As you go into this holiday season, ask God for a pearl of joy. Like pearls, crafted through abrasion, God’s true joy is often formed in us during difficult seasons.

Here’s the thing, His strength isn’t doled out based on our goodness, our success or failure, or the fact the holiday season is hard or sad for you. He is ready, willing and able to overcome all your weaknesses, fears and anxiety, sadness with the power of His very own joy.

His joy. Your strength.

I’ve been walking into rooms, houses, outdoors, raising my arms and shouting, “Joy!” People look at me funny, but I want to spread the joy of the Lord. To spread the very essence of His strength.

Indescribable Joy

Joy surpasses any happiness.  Happiness is dependent on circumstances.  Joy is not.  I am filled with overflowing joy (not because it's my birthday :) but because of Jesus).  Joy is found in our gratitude to the Lord.  Joy is found in knowing Jesus.  Joy is found in walking with Him even through the valley of the shadow of death. Joy is found in living for God (our Source of joy) and doing His will. Joy is found in childlike faith. Joy is found in Christ-like attitude. Joy is found in loving, giving, and serving.  You can have true joy if you love Jesus above all else, then sincerely love and genuinely care about others, and put yourself last.

DVD Review: Homeless for the Holidays

Homeless for the Holidays is based on a true story that the writer/producer/director and his family experienced. It was made on a small budget; some of the actors even worked for free.  My family and I were quite impressed with the quality of the production and the quality of the actors' performance.

This movie is centered around the ups and downs of Jack Baker and his family. Jack, an ambitious marketing director, enjoys his rapid success at one moment and then the next moment he faces a crisis that changes everything. From the lifestyle of "have-plenty" to "have-nots"! After a long string of desperate job searches, he gets a job that barely pays enough for him and his family to survive. His bills keep piling up and finally, he and his family end up being homeless during Christmastime. The beautiful generosity of a young girl and a conversation with a stranger make Jack Baker pause and think about his past, present, and God's purpose for his life/future. He realizes Baby Jesus was also homeless and many people are homeless during this tough economy. Instead of focusing on their circumstances, he and his family seek to bless others. They learn the joy of having less and giving more. They embrace the joy of being together and spending time bonding as a family. We find this movie to be entertaining and inspiring. There are many witty and funny lines that made us laugh out loud. This movie speaks about the message of hope, faith, family, joy, and contentment. Watching this movie made us more thankful for what we have and reminded us to pray for and help out the homeless more. By the way, we think the actor, Matt Moore, who plays Jack Baker, looks and acts like Adam Sandler :). If you and your family are looking for a family-friendly movie you can enjoy together this holiday season, check this one out.

Friday's Fave Five #8

It's time for another Friday's Fave Five (hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story).

My fave five this week include:
1. Great bargains.  We bought a bike for our 11 yo son for $2 and a bagful of nice clothes for $1 at a church's rummage sale. We also got 24 DVDs for $20 at our local Hollywood Video store which was closing down.  After we watch them, we'll trade the ones we don't want to keep on DVD Swap (I mentioned about that last week).

2. Fun family time at Wunderland (an arcade).  On Tuesday, my husband took a day off and spent time with us (so glad we homeschool and can take a day off whenever we want to).  We all had lots of fun and only spent about $15.  My husband was extremely good at one of the games and won us tons of tickets which we traded in for several cool toys (worth more than $15).

3. Simple joys are the best!  My boys can spend hours folding paper airplanes and testing them out.  I enjoyed watching them help each other and I enjoyed trying their planes out, too.  We also love doing Mad Libs (a great tool for teaching parts of speech).  Laughter is guaranteed to follow :).

4. Chili paste with basil leaves (product of Thailand).  Whenever I go to an Asian grocery store, this is the first thing I'm looking for.  It's a staple item for me; it makes everything taste good :).  It reminds me of Thailand (where I was born and raised).

5. My music playlist.  I like to visit my blog because I enjoy listening to the songs on my playlist :).  Right now, I'm listening to You Put This Love in My Heart by Keith Green.  What is your favorite song on your playlist (if you have one)?  If you don't have a playlist, what's your current favorite song (I might want to add it to my playlist :))?

Have a blessed Good Friday and Resurrection Day weekend, everyone!  Jesus paid it all for you and me so that we can spend eternity with God!  He died on that cross to save our souls.  Because He lives, we can face any day, any trials, anything.  We're victorious in Christ! There is no defeat...no despair...no death when we are in Christ.

Rejoice!

There is fullness of joy in God's presence.  Each day is a gift from the Lord filled with new possibilities.  My prayer today: Lord, please make my life a joy to You & to others, in spite of my trials and sufferings. You're my Source of joy & strength!  I rejoice and delight in You always.

Author Bio:
Sally Clarkson is a popular speaker, known across the nation and internationally for her work with women. She has worked in various ministries, including Campus Crusade for Christ. With her husband, Clay, she is cofounder of Whole Heart Ministries, which encourages and equips Christian parents. The Clarksons, parents of four, live near Colorado Springs , Colorado.

Review: "Joy" is a lovely word that we all want to experience but often cannot find because we tend to focus our attention on our circumstances, trials, disappointment, and discontent. Dancing with My Father helps guide us to let go of all that and hold on to God’s hand, instead. "Let your soul dance with delight in God." Each chapter ends with questions and/or suggestions to help you find your rhythm in God’s joy. I enjoyed reading this book and jotting down notes on my diary. In search of true lasting joy, the author relies on God and His Word. She learns to look at things through God’s eyes with eternal perspectives and embrace childlike faith. Let us all choose to dance with our Heavenly Father, the Source of joy, who loves us and is always ready to lead us into a life full of joy. Will you follow His steps and enjoy the dance?

Thankful Thursday #16

 
This week...
1. I am thankful that "It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23)  It is very comforting to me that His mercies, compassions, and faithfulness never fail...never cease.  "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." (Psalm 23:6)  I am glad that I don't have to wake up to the same day everyday like the main character in the movie, "Groundhog Day" :).  If I fail today or make mistakes or today is an unpleasant day (filled with troubles and sorrow, etc.), tomorrow is a brand new day...God's mercy, compassion, and faithfulness already waiting there for me.

2. I am thankful for solitude and silence.  Just me and God alone!  It's a precious time when all is well with my soul.  You might find it funny but I enjoy ironing my husband's clothes.  I spend that ironing time to think and pray.  God often brings to my mind the Scriptures I need and/or the people I should pray for.  "Be still, and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10a

3. I am thankful for tears.  I usually feel much better after I cry.  "Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.  He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him." (Psalm 126:5-6)  I think it's wonderful that God created us with the ability to shed tears and thus release emotional tension.  I cry easily...happy cries, sad cries, overwhelmed-by-God's love-for-me cries, cries over touching movies or songs, etc. 

4. I am thankful for my beloved husband who is very loving, understanding, caring, and supportive.  He is the greatest listener, counselor, peacemaker, encourager, and prayer partner.

5. I am thankful for my youngest son, Isaiah (8) who is a remarkable boy.  He is such a joy and a blessing.  He is obedient, respectful, polite, diligent, hard-working, kind, compassionate, patient, and cheerful.

Let me repeat that again: Peace and joy to the world...because of Him.  Peace does not come from the condition of this world, nor the condition of our lives.  Joy does not come from receiving or giving perfect gifts, having a picture-perfect decorated house, or getting a bonus check from work, etc.  True peace and joy only come from Christ, our Savior!  I would like to share the poem below with those who have lost their loved ones (who were saved) and find it hard to embrace "peace" and "joy".  I hope and pray that the Lord will give you His peace and joy that comfort you in time of grief and sorrow.

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below
With tiny light like Heaven’s stars reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular please wipe away that tear,
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.


I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear
But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas Choir up here.
I have no words to tell you of the joy their voices bring
For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing.


I know how much you miss me, and see the pain inside your heart
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

God With Us

I love all of Jesus's names.  One of them that touches my heart deeply is Immanuel: God with us.  I am forever grateful and in awe that our Almighty God who can have anything in this universe, loves us so much and wants to be with us...to dwell in us. 

"The virgin will be with Child and will give birth to a Son and they will call Him Immanuel (Emmanuel)--which means, 'God with us.'" Matthew 1:23

The skies don't seem to be as dark as usual
The stars seem brighter then they've been before
Deep within I feel my soul a stirring
As though my hope has been restored
The shepherds say they've heard the voice of angels
Confirming rumors spread across the land
That a child protected well from Herod's anger
